Operator VS Documentary Film: Film Workshop with Les Lieskov
As part of the Wiz-Art Festival, in collaboration with What if Creative Studio, we have prepared a wonderful opportunity for you to not only learn more about the work of a cinematographer in documentary film, but also to create your own documentary stories.
The event will consist of two parts: a theoretical lecture and a practical film workshop. During the theoretical lecture, we will discuss all the main features of the work of a cinematographer in documentary filmmaking. We invite people who are ready to shoot and finalize documentary observations around the Wiz-Art Festival, which will take place on September 17-21, and show it on September 21 on the big screen at the closing of the film festival. The number of places is limited, so don’t hesitate!
Participants in the practical part will receive:
- a pass to all festival screenings
- cool merch from the team
- something intriguing from the festival’s partners — M-Rental, service of camera and lighting equipment rental.
You will also have the opportunity to try out various camera setups from M-Rental, assembled specifically for documentary projects.
The event will take place at the location of our wonderful partners, America House Lviv, 2 Hnatiuka St., 2nd floor.

Who will be the curator?
Les Lieskov is a cinematographer and lighting designer with extensive experience in feature films, TV series, advertising, and, of course, documentary films.
As a documentary cinematographer, he has worked with teams from Poland, France (Channel One), the UK (BBC), and Lithuania, and participated in the documentary projects Yaremchuk: The Incomparable World of Beauty,“ ”Episodes,“ ”Storks Always Come Home“ (winner of the national competition at the Molodist Film Festival 2024), and ”Time of Flight” (premiered at the Berlinale 2025).
Les is convinced that there is nothing more authentic and important in Ukraine today than documentary filmmaking. Maybe you agree?
In any case, come in and let’s talk about it!
The film workshop is completely free. To participate, please fill out a short Google form: https://forms.gle/xiV3GEuadj16QCKr6
